Unlocking More Value From FHIR Deployment Models

With API’s bringing new ways to unlock value that can lead to dramatically better health outcomes for patients, healthcare organizations everywhere, especially US payers, are standing up FHIR servers in increasing numbers to satisfy a variety of different use cases.

In this presentation, Smile Digital Health CTO, James Agnew, outlines two different FHIR server deployment models for adopting scalable APIs–the facade model where data is delivered in real-time from existing data sources and the repository model where data is copied to a purpose-built repository and queried on demand. While each can leverage an organization’s investment in their existing IT infrastructure, he delves into the relative strengths and weaknesses for different usage scenarios, as well as the architectural challenges of identity management and resource identities common to both models.
