Welcoming Ken Stevens to the Smile team!

Author:  Clement Ng

Smile CDR is thrilled to welcome Ken Stevens to our development team as our new Director of Enterprise Solutions! Ken is leading our efforts in high-performance computing, enabling clients to build health applications that operate at web-scale.

Ken is formerly the Vice President of Healthcare at Intelliware development and brings nearly 25 years of professional experience in software development.

“I have long felt that the future of healthcare IT will be built on standards-based clinical data repositories that are managed independently of workflow,” says Ken. “Smile CDR is positioned perfectly for where I believe this market is headed.”

After completing a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Toronto, Ken joined the Globe and Mail (later Bell Globemedia) where he led the application development team responsible for building the Globe and Mail, CTV and TSN websites. For the past 15 years, Ken has been designing and delivering enterprise healthcare IT solutions. He established Intelliware’s Healthcare practice and help drive their overall IT strategy while leading the design and implementation of numerous large-scale, multi-year healthcare IT projects.

Ken also served on the Board of Directors of ITAC Health, Canada’s industry association of healthcare IT companies.  As Co-Chair of the ITAC Health Interoperability and Standards Committee, Ken led a national industry survey to identify and establish Canadian industry positions on healthcare data interoperability standards. This work led to a Position Paper published by ITAC Health.  Ken then worked with Canadian healthcare ministries and agencies to inform and influence government policy direction with respect to interoperability standards.

Ken’s thinking on the current state and future direction of the Canadian health IT industry can also be found in Healthcare Information Management & Communications Canada, the official journal of ITAC and Digital Health Canada, where he is a regular contributor.

Ken’s history of industry leadership and his longstanding commitment to building open-source and standards-based health software make him an ideal fit with Smile CDR’s philosophy and mission.

Outside of work, Ken is an avid hiker and table-top gamer, having even created and published a couple of board games of his own.
