Duncan Weatherston
Top Chef
Duncan has been an IT professional and entrepreneur for over 25 years. He has a multidisciplinary background that spans business development and systems integration, development, and support. Duncan played a significant role in the development of Ontario's electronic health record services, and he is an advocate of using health data to support clinical outcomes.

James Agnew
Head Geek
James has 15 years of experience in healthcare software development, architecture, and in development management. He has extensive experience in developing interoperability solutions, healthcare data capture and visualization software, and most recently mobile medical apps. He is a member and co-chair of HL7, and an editor of the HL7 FHIR standard. He is also the project lead for the HAPI Project, and smiles a lot.

Rhea Kolanko
Operations Overlady
Rhea has worked across many facets of IT over the past 15 years including sales, operations and most notably, project management. Her most personally rewarding projects in healthcare included integrating regional and provincial health records systems and infrastructure deployments with some of the GTA’s largest healthcare institutions. In her spare time, she’s usually in school for a class or two, and has a rather large Malamute puppy that loves her to bits.

Adam Cole

Adam joined Smile with 25 years of executive digital health management experience. He has led technology and innovation teams at three national/multi-national health organizations and shepherded four startups to successful exits.
He sits on numerous boards and advisory committees and has won a number of prestigious awards including IT Professional of the Year (as named by peers). Currently, he is trying to break 12hrs on an IM, but work keeps interfering with his training. :)

Aditya found his passion in healthcare IT when he started working at Ministry Of Health and Long-Term Care. He then continued his journey as a Full-Stack FHIR Developer at Smile CDR. He is an excellent team player and a leader when it comes to solving healthcare challenges. Other than programming, he also likes to play outdoor sports and video games.

Alicia Lee

Alicia is a graphic design graduate of the YSDN program at York University. She is passionate about problem solving through design, and she specializes in making improvements to both the visual and user interface in order to enhance the user experience. Alicia believes in aligning herself with projects that serve a greater purpose, and she will help to make a positive impact on people’s lives. She also enjoys playing ukulele.

Anu fell in love with design when he was first introduced to photoshop during high school. Anu latter discovered his love for the human brain and graduated from UofT with a psychology degree. He is now a UX designer who learned that not only can he design, but he can combine it with his passion for the human mind. He loves figuring out the psychology behind intricate details and designing delightful experiences.

She is also in the middle of planning to think about writing a book.

Dan has a passion for Healthcare IT having over 25 years of experience in the provider field (IT Director at a hospital in Quebec), Healthcare strategic consulting, and senior positions in the Healthcare IT vendor sectors. Dan feels it is important to give back and has been active in various Healthcare Board activities (Acute, Community, and Long Term Care), and as well as distributions of school and health supplies to the youth of West Africa. Passion? Experiencing new cultures through travel. And, oh yeah, canoeing as often as he can.

Diederik is a software developer with [current_year - 2011] years experience in the healthcare and finance sectors. It's important to Diederik that his work be challenging, interesting, and impactful. He enjoys short-haired cats, taco-shaped pillows, and 1..*-player board games. Drew Hannah

Drew is an ex-software developer who helped create some major international software releases. 19 years ago he shifted into sales and marketing of software and services, primarily healthcare related. Drew has presented at international software conferences, such as HIMSS and AHIP, and has specialized in creating new healthcare sales practices. One of Drew’s major passions is creating music; he plays drums, harmonica, keyboards and more in a local Connecticut based bar band and uses his home studio to create original music and sounds.

Edward has worked in operations (and dabbled in projects and logistics) since 2014, and uses skills gained in chaotic start-up environments to help bring order to cross-team workflow and communication. He is excited to be part of the growing Smile team, and spends his free time with pets, tabletop games, and working on his car.

Garry has been building teams and running complex technology projects for, um, let's just say quite some time. He has worked in academia, with startup companies and fortune 500 companies and in recent years has been focused on the healthcare industry. He is a closet musician (electronic), scuba diver (if that ever happens again) and husband/father. He is foster-dad to Neeko, a standard poodle breeder for the Lions Club Dog Guides program.

Hernan is an IT/Sales professional with over 20 years of experience in consulting, including government, law, and manufacturing. He thrives in challenging environments that require innovation and creative problem solving. Hernan's strong leadership, and analytical and problem solving skills deliver desired results for his clients. Howard Jong

Howard loves to learn from customers and helps create new products that deliver tangible business value. Before joining Smile, Howard commercialized technologies for pharmaceuticals leveraging computational modeling, high-throughput automation, and data science. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from UBC and a Masters in Innovation & Entrepreneurship from Smith Business. Howard is also a Liverpool FC supporter--even when they are terrible.

Ian Marshall

Ian is a software professional with over 20 years experience developing, implementing, and supporting solutions for the healthcare industry. He has significant experience with systems integration and order entry systems. He has been a leader and contributor and held both client-facing and back-office roles but is ultimately most passionate about finding ways to use technology to simplify and improve delivery of healthcare. Outside of work, Ian enjoys exploring the outdoors and getting his hands dirty with gardening and home DIY projects.

Focusing on the intersection of technology and healthcare, Jennifer is a “Jenn-of-all-trades” who holds degrees in both Computer Science and Healthcare Administration, and has consistently leveraged her skills and experience to improve patient experiences and outcomes. In her spare time, Jennifer splits her time between trying to convince her dog Pixel to ride in a bike trailer and eating ice cream.

Ken has been developing software professionally for over 20 years. After completing a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Toronto, Ken wrote the code that published the Globe and Mail newspaper on the Internet. Ken has been designing and delivering Healthcare software for the past 10 years, focussed mostly on pharmacy and healthcare interoperability tooling. Ken recently led the delivery of a Canada-wide Healthcare IT Industry position paper on interoperability standards. Outside of work, Ken is an enthusiastic table-top gamer and hiker.

After an undergrad degree in history from UWO, Mark worked in China as, variously, a teacher, interviewer, translator and digital marketer. Apart from helping to spread the good word about Smile CDR’s healthcare solutions, Mark enjoys staying informed about global issues and getting hopped up on MSG-laced street food.

Mohammad is a full stack JavaScript developer who enjoys working on web applications. He has a BComm from Ryerson University and an Advanced Diploma from Sheridan College in programming. Mohammad worked for 2 years at Scotiabank as a Senior Technical Analyst. There he mostly provided technical support to traders and later found passion for web development.

Natalia is a project manager with a BComm in Global Management from Ryerson University. She has experience leading software development projects in the healthcare industry, including the integration of a provincial health registry system. At Smile CDR, Natalia is responsible for planning, executing and evaluating multiple projects and driving them through their entire life cycle. Natalia thrives in a team environment and is enthusiastic about creating a positive workplace culture. Passionate about women empowerment, Natalia is the former President of Ryerson’s largest women empowerment network: Ryerson Women in Leadership (RWIL). In her spare time, Natalia trains the art of Ninjutsu and laughs a lot.

Ruslan has been in a field of IT more than 10 years until he realized that his real passion in programming. He relocated to Toronto in order to pursue his career as a Java Developer. He is never tired of learning and now his professional interest lies in the healthcare field. He is focused on developing his skills on HAPI-FHIR framework. Among his less professional interest is video gaming and playing guitar. He also a big fan of outdoor activities.

Sylburn originally joined Smile to complete requirements for their Health Informatics degree, and are delighted with that decision. They now get to combine over 5 years’ experience in public health and public sector healthcare planning, with their I.T knowledge, to create solutions for the improvement of healthcare delivery.

Darma grew up on the streets of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and relocated to Toronto in order to pursue a career in the fast growing field of health information management. Her responsibilities include security, employee wellness, and napping. Darma has earned a certificate of foundational skills at the When Hounds Fly academy and has passable recall skills. She is still unsure as to who is a good girl.

FIFA grew up on the rolling hills of Bradford, Ontario and recently relocated to Toronto to continue her career in the area of undercover security. FIFA’s area of expertise are in Snack Sniffing and Lunch Disposal. Fifa was trained by Rio a Rottweiler/German Shepperd mix, in the art of Coyote avoidance. Originally a resident of Mississauga, Juju now lives in Durham where she happily greets all passers-by. She spends hours a day practicing the best poses and knows how to get all the attention. She has a decent sized wardrobe of fashionable sweaters and coats, and spends her spare time playing with her big little sister, Mishu.

Though Kona grew up in Regent Park, her first job was with the Toronto Humane Society as part of their pupper engagement and wellness events where she was first introduced to working with employees in healthcare. Her floofiness has been loved by many in person and on her mom's instagram account. Ensuring daily walks is part of Kona's routine, and can be quite vocal if things are running late. She reminds everyone during walks to take time to smell around the flowers and - SQUIRREL!

Neeko is part of the Lions Club Dog Guides program . After starting her training to be a service dog she was so perfect she was promoted to breeder (aka Handmaid) so they could make more puppies just like her. She had her first litter of 9 pups in March 2020. She came home exhausted. In her spare time she studies high-order mathematics, practices 3-dimensional Sudoku in her head, and barks senselessly at squirrels.

Pixel is an Old English Sheepdog hailing from Waterloo, Ontario. She is a member of an exclusive invitation-only private members club catering to puppies born to a life of belly rubs. An experienced leader and independent thinker, she’s been herding her team of stuffed lambies for over 2 years and isn’t afraid to push back when upper management asks her to “come”. She says the secret to her success is "bark bark bark". Pixel spends every second of her spare time waiting for leftover ice cream.
